A hundred years ago the first Chinese migrants settled in the Netherlands. First as sailors and later as peanut vendors and restaurant owners. They were followed by Chinese refugees, students and highly skilled personnel. Chinese migrants emancipated and rose on the social ladder. Yet the Chinese community has long been isolated and many social and economic problems were solved within their own group, outside of the eye of the public, researchers and policymakers.
The study Chinese in the Netherlands gives an overview of the demographic composition of the Chinese community and the existing Chinese institutions and interest groups. It analyzes the living and working conditions of Chinese migrants and pays special attention to a number of subgroups.
